MENDEL and the EXTENDED BLICBLAU FAMILY

ZDUNSKA WOLA FOR PESACH:

Mendel BLICBLAU was born in Lodz, Poland, on June 13, 1923, to Dovid Leib and Chaya Frimet (nee Brawerman). Mendel was the fourth of five siblings, his grandparents on both sides lived in Zdunska Wola.

He especially loved the festival of Pesach because it was spent with his grandparents on his father’s side, Avrom and Chana Dworja Blicblau. They lived at 25 Sieradzka Street in Zdunska Wola, about an hour away from home, by bus or train. Zdunska Wola was on the main train line between Lodz and Kalish. Mendel would be put on the train or bus by his parents in Lodz and picked up by his grandparents in Zdunska Wola. As he was the youngest of the boys at home, he was expected to ask the “Ma Nishtanah” the 4 “kashas” (questions). He also said there were bed bugs in the bed!

Zdunska Wola was a small village and the main streets including Sieradzka (“the road to Sieradz”) were paved with cobblestones. There were horse-drawn carriages and only a few cars. Milk was brought on a horse and cart, and coffins were taken on a horse-drawn carriage to the local cemetery. There was no electricity until the early 1930’s.

Mendel’s grandparents house was wooden, the toilet was outside and there was no sewerage. The communal water supply came from wells in courtyards and backyards.

Mendel’s grandparents were religiously orthodox and his grandfather had a beard and payes (sidelocks). Avrom worked as a cobbler, repairing shoes. His grandmother shopped in the market, Rynek, in the town square. There were communal ovens and on Fridays his grandmother would take her chulent to the bakery’s oven. The flavour and quality of the shabbas chulent was affected by where the pot was placed in the oven – and often this depended on what time she got to the bakery!

Avrom’s parents, Chaim and Dyna (nee Markowicz) were both born in Zdunska Wola. Both Chaim Blicblau’s parents, Icek Lejb and Rachel BLICBLAU, and Dyna’s parents, Lewek and Brauna MARKOWICZ, were born in Zdunska Wola.

Chana Dworja’s parents were both from Zdunska Wola: Szlama Blicblau (a cousin) and Brandla (nee DOLEWACKA).

Chaya Frimet was born in Zdunska Wola and her parents were born in Zdunska Wola. Lipman Brawerman was a weaver. He married Taube (nee WODZISLADSKA/WOJDYSLAWSKA).

Lipman’s parents were Mendel and Rojza (nee GOLDSZTAJN) and were born in Zdunska Wola
